Creating a logo for a company, a freelancer, or even just an idea, can be a true task. Some say that it is more difficult than creating a whole theme from scratch. The logo has to match the personality of the company, as well as explain the purpose of the entire business with a single image. As a freelance logo designer it is your job to make the company stand out – with one simple logo. Logo design also has the potential to pay more, especially if the company becomes successful!
1. Break The Rules !
Never follow the rules of logo making. Break every rule in the book, and create what the client wants while adding your own flare. The logo should be vibrant and stand out from the rest. If you want to make big bucks designing logos, then make one that is true to the business, but unique. Like the Carp Shop example above, the designer broke many rules by taking an object from a fisherman’s living room and throwing it into a logo, which extreme detail this logo is one of a kind.
2. Always opt for clean and captivating concepts
Choose clean concepts that are easy to read yet captivating. This will be memorable to individuals that visit the company website. FEDEX and other large companies have clean yet impressionable logos that will never be forgotten. The Diony Shop example above is a great example of a very simple logo that is very clean and distinguishes the company just enough without going overboard.
3. Promote a positive image and idea
Don’t do anything dark, drab, or negative. Try to avoid making logos for people that want to promote something negative or illegal. This will tarnish your reputation quickly, and really isn’t worth the risk. Having positive uplifting work in your design portfolio is sure to attract potential clients more often than not. If you want to have one or two darker themed logos in your portfolio that is fine, but make sure that they are not intimidating to other clients and be sure to be careful in displaying such logos.
4. Create Multi Browser compatible Logos

Make sure your logo is acceptable in all viewing areas. Be sure that MAC’s and PC’s can clearly see the logo, and it doesn’t hurt to test it in the major browsers that most people use. Never use colors that may be altered once viewed on the web. Making sure that web colors are multiplatform friendly is probably the most overlooked aspect of design. Most designers think of their computer and setup only and forget to check on other platforms (Linux being the most forgotten about among designers, no offense). Make sure you check out BrowserShots (www.browsershots.org) to check your website and logo in other browsers.
5. Look for Inspirations from leading sites
Look for inspiration in all corners of the universe. There are so many professional logo designs available on the internet. It is never OK to copy others, but it is always OK to draw from inspiring sources to create something truly remarkable. Using websites like LogoPond (www.logopond.com), Logo Galleria (http://www.logogalleria.com/), and Logo Faves (http://logofaves.com/).
6. Always save completed Logo on PSD or other editable format
Always save back up copies and copies that can be edited. This will definitely help you to save much time since you need not start from scratch. Even if the client doesn’t like it, be prepared to tweak and rearrange until it is suitable. Never completely change your concept. The client (I have done this before) has said they wanted something different and then changed their mind. Make sure you name them in a consistent manner, for example, ClientName_Concept1, ClientName_Concept2, etc.
7. Concentrate on Color schemes and patterns
Offer a few variants of your design to the business that is ordered from you. A few different color schemes, fonts, sizes, and general concepts will allow them to choose what works best. Make sure you provide open ended ideas so that the client has some room to give some suggestions. Clients would rather have the process take a bit longer and be happy then have a fast logo that they do not like.
8. Concentrate on Client requirements
Never forget the requirements that a client asks for. Always ask questions before doing something that deviates from the original order, and always show updated WIP’s just in case. Always print the instructions out from the client and have them readily available for you to look at (or if you have duel monitors, save the trees) so when you have a mix up and can’t remember the specific color or item to include you can quickly reference the instructions and keep moving on your work.
9. Try to avoid cheap Stock Images
Never use cheap looking stock images. If you need stock, try to take your own stock images. If that isn’t an option, it’s almost always worth it to purchase premium stock. Cheap logo designs are visible from a mile away, and your client will not return for more!
So if you are looking for a professional business , then never opt for cheap stock images. It will bring you bad reputation for your service.
10. Be broadminded
Lastly, try different things when you create logos. Don’t stick to one boring method. Utilize the power of different programs and even do raw sketches before starting a logo! This will help you create the most mind-blowing logos the Internet has ever seen.
I hope that the above tips will definitely help you in your design work. Along with these tips , I would like to present 10 really useful logo design tutorials which i have came across.
