Tips for Designers and Developers Using Twitter

4 Comments 07 September 2009

At the beginning many people were tempted to dismiss Twitter as one of the million monthly internet upstarts with an expiry date.   However, Twitter has gone on to defy many odds and not only remain in market but increase in customer base and geographical scope.  It seemed overnight that everyone was on Twitter as it is a great way to share opinions, keep personal contacts and add new ones.

As a web designer, you can harness several resources that Twitter avails for the betterment of your design and development skills. Used correctly, Twitter can be a conduit to personal and financial success. Some of the things that a designer or developer can do are:

1: Follow and be followed

Twitter can be a great way to market you as a web designer or developer.  This can be done by twitting about web development and design and following web designers and developers. Soon if your twits are informative and well put you will not only become a celebrity on Twitter but also a household name for great web designers and developers.  Follow established designers and developers too as you will gain a wealth of information and network of people who think along your lines.

2: Keep it personal

Even though you are tweeting about your work be tactful and keep it personal.  Sounding business like not only gets you un-followed as tweeters try to keep the tool informal but will also make you unpopular.  Mix business tweets with personal updates and keep the tone humorous or fan.

3: Get a twitter client

A client is an application you install and use offline or online for it to update your posts at your will.  Good desktop clients for example TweetDeck allow one to create discussion groups, group tweets into categories, keep track of discussion threads and help you to easily post your tweets, retweets and replies to your followers’ tweets.

4: Link to your other pages

For unobtrusive marketing of your skills and also added exposure link your Twitter page to your other online interests like your blog, website and social network sites like facebook.  There is a host of tools to enable you do this namely Tweets to Facebook and Twitter Widget. Whenever you post anything from these other pages, they appear as Tweets on your Twitter page.  This thus keeps your followers in the know of what you are doing.

5: Look for people with similar interests

Interact with people of your trade.  There are tools available for finding Twitters of your area of specialty like web design and development.  This is a good way to stay abreast of new developments in the world of design and also establishes your name among renowned web developers and designers.  Tools such as wefollow.com help you keep tabs on what other designers are talking about.

There is a wide range of Twitters who are fully dedicated to design and development related topics. Examples include:

Being light years away from being a proper webdesigner I dream about its options. I am a great fan of all kinds of web design ideas. This must be one of few things I eagerly stack away like treasured collections. Everybody collects different Internet related stuff. Web design is fascinating. If only I was 20 years or even better 30 years younger. I also like ideas on promoting design or anything related. Twitter is one of biggest fun tools which was invented. There are days I find Twitter extremely creative. It lets you come up with short messages which are absolute fun to set up. Twitter should be seen as a mental sport which can be really amusing.
