Sean is right, there are many different avenues a budding web designer can follow. You can work for yourself as a freelancer (more difficult to get work and build your business), you can work for a large web design firm (often leaves you with less creative control), or you can work for a small web design studio (in between freelancer and large firm).

It was great reading this article. I am just now starting my degree program for Computer Information Systems. I'm going for Web Development & Administration. I have been using photoshop and designing sites for some time now. I do my own work. I just felt the need to get a degree just in case I inched away from freelance after a while.

Anyway, great article. I'm glad to see that someone understands that it's ok to go traditional OR informal.
