Career as a Web Designer
Web designing and development are the pretty common words but many of us don’t know what exactly they are. In this article I try to throw some light on various aspects relating to web design/development. In layman a web designer or a web developer is a person who creates and arranges the pages to make a great website. A web designer is responsible for giving a look to the website, needs to display company’s brand, services offered, image, and other vital details in a creative manner by judiciously blending his/her power of imagination with other web software/applications.
With the advent of Internet web designing / development has become a promising career option. Web designing admires creativity and those who have flair for creativity could become a part of this sensational industry. Besides being creative, one must be well versed with various software applications like Adobe Photoshop, Dream Weaver, Flash, etc.
Today’s highly competitive job market seeks experts in every discipline, so try to be an expert in your field. Like other career options, web designing also demands dedication, devotion and hard work. So the arena of web development and designing needs creative and expert brains. This field could prove to be a very good career option for the students of fine arts.
It is always advisable to know more about things related to the industry before actually diving into the industry i.e. what all are the career options available, the availability of good companies, how much it can pay, scope of freelance, scope for your own business, etc. In my opinion hordes of jobs are available in the market and every company needs a web designer. Besides this, this field also offers good money. I will repeat again that conduct a through research before actually investing your precious time and money in the industry.
So if you are creative and enjoy playing a game with the complex codes then web designing / development can be a promising career. Go get a search on any good job portal and you will find hundreds of job matching your niche. Besides this you can make good money from freelancing, your own blog/website, your own small design studio. Here I would love to share some great blogs owned by some great design professional i.e. smashingmagazine.com, sixrevisions.com, abduzeedo.com, youthedesinger.com, justcreativedesign.com and lot more.
Education for Web Designers
It is a bitter fact that many renowned web designers don’t have advanced degrees. We can say web designing is just like art work which doesn’t require any technical experience but only requires expertise in various software applications and Internet. Many Website Designers are self-taught, starting on their own and learning design skills and design languages as they develop pages. But having a recognized and technical degree in the discipline would definitely provide an additional edge.
When talking about taking education for the field there are two very common ways to become a web designer, formal training and self training.
Both degree holders and self taught personals can get success in the industry as the only thing required is the creativity. Yes, there exist some big companies which demand some educational proofs for their formalities but there are lot of other just looking for creative professionals. No matter if it’s a software development firm, advertising agency, publishing house, design studios, manufacturers and departmental store, marketing firm, an educational institute or library, every industry is yours (for a web dsigner)
So we can say it’s a ever green field. The requirement of a web designer or developer is increasing day by day even in today’s recessionary trend, ample of job opportunities are available for you guys.

It was great reading this article. I am just now starting my degree program for Computer Information Systems. I’m going for Web Development & Administration. I have been using photoshop and designing sites for some time now. I do my own work. I just felt the need to get a degree just in case I inched away from freelance after a while.
Anyway, great article. I’m glad to see that someone understands that it’s ok to go traditional OR informal.

Sean is right, there are many different avenues a budding web designer can follow. You can work for yourself as a freelancer (more difficult to get work and build your business), you can work for a large web design firm (often leaves you with less creative control), or you can work for a small web design studio (in between freelancer and large firm).
