Right now, artistic designs are very hot! With CSS becoming the standard, designers are becoming much more important part of the internet world, allowing the awesome effects that were once reserved for print designs.
This tutorial will teach you how to quickly create a “grunge” effect for your photos using ONLY Photoshop. And while you might not need a grunge image, it will show you how to create a vector mask which will give you a tool to create numerous effects easily.

Step 1:
Duplicate the image by creating a new layer and paste the image into it.
Step 2:
Create a ripple effect. Filter>Distort>Ripple from the main menu. Use 900% and leave size at medium. This is going to start distorting your image.
Step 3:
Use the Diffuse filter to rough up the edges of the ripple. You do this by doing Filter>Stylize>Diffuse from main menu. The default mode works great.
Step 4:
We can now Blur the layer while will continue to “grunge” up our layer. Use Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur on the main menu.
Step 5:
Lets add one more quick filter. Filter>Artistic>Neon Glow.
Step 6:
Okay, so now you probably think I’m crazy. That’s PERFECT. Right now your image is going to look like a scattered mess. Something like this.

Now it’s time to see how easy it is to turn this mess into something beautiful. We need to click the Add Layer Mask Icon in the bottom of Layers palette (it’s the one that’s a circle inside a rectangle). This will put a white box next to your grunge layer in your layer box.
Press “B” on the keyboard to open the Brush Tool and select the Brush Picker. Be sure “BLACK” is the selected color of your brush. Now click the layer mask (the little white box next to your grunge layer that we just created). Now anywhere you color on your image will show the original layer below.

Voila: Now you have a grunge version of the image. There are many more things that can be done with this basic technique, but this should get you thinking!
